Vernon House
Supervisor Vernon House (Ret) began his career as a School Safety Officer in 1981 and was promoted to School Safety Sergeant in 1990. In 1997 he was offered the opportunity to become an instructor at the Academy. He continued to grow as an instructor and later became the Curriculum Coordinator for the School Safety Training Unit. He served in this capacity for 16 years before leaving and returning to the field as the Borough Trainer for the School Safety Division’s Manhattan South Command. In October of 2019 Vernon was promoted to Supervisor of School Security and in 2021 returned to the Police Academy where he now serves as the Platoon Commander for School Safety Officer recruits.
He is one of the Department’s premiere speakers on the subject of Bullying in Schools and Tactical Communication. He also conducts seminars on Gender Identity, LGBT Sensitivity for Law Enforcement and Professionalism in the Workplace. He is a regular lecturer for the Police Department’s Citizen’s Police Academy and often speaks at schools to staff, Parent’s Associations as well as various other community groups.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Vernon is committed to protecting the future of the youth of New York City. He acknowledges that it was the unselfish sacrifice of caring adults during his childhood that helped him to become the person he is and that “the village truly helped to raise the child” and it is in their memory that he so willingly gives back in any way he can. It is his belief that we must return to a philosophy of being responsible for each other’s well-being in order for our children to flourish and become responsible, respectable members of society.
